Question
Does reciting the Qurʾān benefit the deceased?
Answer
According to the answer reproduced here, when the Qurʾān is recited by the child of a deceased father or mother, that recitation benefits the deceased parent. As for a person other than one’s own child reciting the Qurʾān, this answer states that such recitation does not benefit another deceased person in the same way.
The wife is therefore also excluded from this category in the cited answer. However, a wife grieving her husband may certainly make supplication for him. If he did much good, she may ask Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, to increase his reward; and if he made mistakes, she may ask the Almighty to overlook them. He should be remembered well and prayed for.
According to this answer, reciting the Qurʾān with the intention of transferring its reward to the husband is not established. His deeds have ended, as referred to in the cited hadith, whose conclusion mentions three continuing matters: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who makes duʿā for him.
